Stepping Up to the Plate
Thanks to my dear hubby who wrote today's blog/prayer! You're the best, sweetheart!

Yesterday morning I (Ken) volunteered to help with
our monthly “sermon in a sack." This is a children’s object lesson
during the morning worship service. The twist is…the speaker does not
know in advance what the object is. Fortunately, I had a quick idea
once the object was taken out of the sack – a softball. I encouraged
our kids to know that just because we may have struck out last time at
the plate, we can still come up to bat with a fresh new start and
opportunity. God’s grace is always available to give us a new at bat as
we are willing to ask Him for fresh wind and fire.
Heavenly
Father, I pray that you will help Lyssa and Kyle today to never grow
tired of doing good. When they are faced with discouraging
circumstances, I ask you would give them a fresh perspective, new
strength and a faith to move forward with courage and grace. I pray
today you will help Lyssa and Kyle to wait upon the Lord. Please help
them today to run and not grow weary and to walk and not be faint. Let
them find their strength in You.

Dare to be Different
"We are aliens and strangers in your sight, as were all our forefathers." 1 Chronicles 29:15
One spring our daughter talked us into planting red petunias. She knew that I normally have a tendency to pick purple or pink, but, red it was. One day, as I went through and was weeding and dead-heading them, I noticed something peculiar. In and among the throngs of red, I found one lone purple flower. Alone it stood.
It reminds me of a prayer for my kids: Be different. Stand out in the crowd. Follow Christ, even when the world looks at you as odd, peculiar, and unpopular. Choose to be who God made you, and the person He wants you to be.
I dare you, children of mine, to be different. Be the purple flowers in the sea of red.
Lord, you call us to be aliens and strangers in this world. You dare us to be different. I pray that for Alyssa and Kyle today. Help our dear children to stand firm in what they know and believe of you, and in who you've called them to be. Give them confidence to make decisions that please you, even when it goes against the crowd, or the thing everyone else is doing. Holy Spirit, prompt their minds and nudge their feet to follow you in everything they say and do. There will be times where they will need courage to be different from the world around them. I know, dear Jesus, you will be right there beside them, leading them down the right paths. It's a high calling to follow you, and a calling that will bring Alyssa and Kyle much blessing. Thank you, Father, for allowing us to be your children, and giving us the strength we need to stand out in this world.

Senior Presentation Day
"For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline." 2 Timothy 1:7
Today is a big day in the final conclusion of Lyssa's senior year. It's Senior Presentation day. Shortly she'll be standing before a panel of 6 judges, and her Senior class, giving a speech or report on what she has learned and experienced through her high school years. I'm not sure if she is nervous, but I know I would be if I were her.
I pray that confidence and passion flow through Lyssa's lips today, and every time she is asked to stand up and tell others what she knows, she'll find herself strong and courageous!
Lord, you do not make Lyssa timid, but you give her your power. May she always be confident to speak with the knowledge and wisdom that you give her. Remove any fear, and make her strong in you! Lord, I know you will always tell Lyssa where to go and she'll go there. You'll tell her what to say and she'll say it. I pray that she not be afraid of a soul because you will be right there, looking after her. Today, may Lyss speak with confidence because you are with her.

Endure with Hope
"We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Thessalonians 1:3
Endurance inspired by hope. God's message to me this week. I can endure because I have hope in Him! God says hold on, stand firm, and hang in there.
Endure with hope...in my parenting.
Endure with hope...in my obedience.
Endure with hope...in my praying.
Endure with hope...in ministry that doesn't look/feel successful.
Enduring with hope. I'm trying to learn.
And I want Alyssa and Kyle to learn to endure with hope too.
Endure with hope...in their schoolwork.
Endure with hope...in their friendship.
Endure with hope...in their beliefs and morals out in the world.
Endure with hope...as they study God's Word.
Endure with hope...as they follow God's plan for their lives.
Enduring with hope... is my phrase for the moment!

"Tebowing"
My two boys are faithful, long-time Denver Bronco fans. Recently, their love for their team has grown to include a deep admiration for their quarterback, Tim Tebow.
If you are anywhere near a television these days, you can hear commentary, discussions and debates about the outspoken, and strongly demonstrative believer on the Broncos. This man is a wonderful example, in my mind, of how someone can be in the public eye, play sports, make lots of money, and still give a loud testimony of loving and living for Jesus Christ.
There has even been a new word added to the "Urban Dictionary" and an entire website to "Tebowing". It's a phenomenon that is catching, and being copied by many.
"Tebowing"= (verb) to get down on a knee and start praying, even if everyone else around you is doing something completely different.
Now that is an athlete that I don't my kids following.
I am praying that Alyssa and Kyle have a faith so deep, wide, and strong, that they will never fear giving God all the glory for their accomplishments and blessings. Maybe it will look like "tebowing", and maybe not. Either way, may they always give God all the praise, honor and glory with their lives!
"Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen." 1 Timothy 1:17
Lord you are our strength and song; you are my salvation. Please become Alyssa and Kyle's God, and may they praise you exalt your name forever. You alone are their rock and their salvation; you, Father are their fortress, they will never be shaken. Alyssa and Kyle's salvation comes from you alone. With every breath, I pray that they give you all the praise, honor and glory. May their actions and their words always be a reflection and representation of you living in their hearts. Lord, be their firm foundation. God, your solid foundation stands firm, and is sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his." I pray that Alyssa and Kyle's lives are always marked by you, dear Jesus, and that they shout it from the mountaintop so that the whole world around them knows whom they believe in. Lord, you are so good, so faithful, and so true. May we abide with you forever!

Things Never Imagined
"If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ." 1 Peter 4:11
Last night VBS started...whew. I love how God pulls this week together.
Once upon a time...
I never imagined I'd direct a VBS.
I never considered teaching a women's Bible study.
I freaked at the thought of talking in front of anyone anywhere.
There were a lot of things I never knew I could do.
There were even a lot of things I decided I'd never even try.
However, God had something else in mind for my life.
I'm thankful, that He saw something different for me than I saw for myself.
I'm thankful that He opened my eyes to His power in my life.
I know that there are a lot of things that Alyssa and Kyle think
they will never do too.
Or things that they think they can't do.
However, God has something in mind for their lives.
He will be transforming them from the inside out.
He will open their eyes to His power that lives within them.
He will grow and develop gifts and talents in them
that they don't even know they have.
I can't wait to see what kind of things they will do with their life...
Things never imagined.
Lord, thank you for who you made Alyssa and Kyle to be, and what they will become with your transforming power working in their lives. They will serve you with the strength you provide them. We are all given different gifts to use for your purposes and glory. All the plans you have for them will succeed if they keep their eyes fixed on you. Lord, teach them that they can do all things through your strength. They will do things they've never imagined. Oh the joy they will find in following you, dear Jesus, and giving their lives wholly to you.

Day for Facing a Fear
"Be strong and courageous." Deuteronomy 31:6
A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post about Alyssa's driving fears and the start of her drivers ed. class. Well today she is taking another step to conquer her fear. It's driving day! The classes are done and now she gets to get behind the wheel.
This is a new opportunity for Lyss to face her fears, trust God for strength and protection, and gain confidence in the abilities He has given her.
Watch out world, here comes Lyss!

Lord, help today to be a successful day in facing fears and having faith in your strength and protection. When Alyssa and Kyle are afraid may they find you to be their refuge and shelter in times of trials and storms. In times where they go through things that build their character and are a part of learning some of life's important lessons, may they depend on you, Father, for guidance, direction, strength and peace. May Alyssa and Kyle not have a spirit of timidity, but one of strength, love and self discipline. With you, dear Jesus, they can be strong and courageous!

Be Strong and Courageous!
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
The command to "be strong and courageous" appears about 11 times in scripture. I think it may be said over and over again because it's something we need to hear. I know that I often need to be reminded to "take courage" (listed at least 4 times).
"Be strong and courageous", Tresa, as you parent.
"Be strong and courageous", Tresa, when you need to face a fear.
"Be strong and courageous"m Tresa, when you think about the future.
"Be strong and courageous", Tresa!
I believe that our children need to hear and be encouraged by this reminder today.
"Be strong and courageous", my child, as you try something new.
"Be strong and courageous", my child, as you face your fear.
"Be strong and courageous", my child, when you have to endure a hurt.
"Be strong and courageous", my child, when you need to speak the truth.
"Be strong and courageous", my child, each time you choose to do the right thing.
With God Alyssa and Kyle can do all things! Nothing is Impossible. Today, I pray that they will be "be strong and courageous!"
Lord, help Alyssa and Kyle to be strong and courageous today. Whatever fears they face, and with whoever they come in contact with, or in whatever they have to do, I pray that they know that you are walking by their side. AnxiousThoughts
"Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts." Psalm 139:23
This week has been filled with many moments where I have found one or both of my children in a state of worry or panic. The end of the school year is on the downhill slide, projects are coming due, tests to be taken, and then there is prom, senior schedules, and needed internship plans. It's easy to let those things become "anxious thoughts, and then they are debilitating to doing the best things. Overwhelming is the word that describes everything.
"Taking our thoughts captive" becomes an important lesson, and handing our concerns to God, a lifeline.
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Philippians 4:6
I'm praying this for Alyssa and Kyle today!
Lord, I know you are fully aware of the anxious thoughts of Alyssa and Kyle. Be their peace through each stress, their hope when doubts are high, and their strength in each situation. What a great thing it would be if they can learn at this young age to not be anxious about anything, and instead lay their burdens at your feet, and entrust you, and you alone, to take care of every details of their lives. You alone are God, and you are present with them through each trial and storm. Lord, remind them of your mighty strength today!

His Life Purpose
"Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong." 1 Corinthians 16:13
Recently Kyle came home from school with a poster he had made. It was supposed to reflect his mission statement for life. He attends a public school, and it made me proud to see that he was bold, and not afraid, to tell his peers all about what is most important to him.

I especially love the statement found in the lower right corner.
"My life's purpose is to become a strong believer through Christ."
My heart did a "happy dance" when he brought this poster home! That's what I'm praying for...and that's why I daily write a blog. Yeah God!
Lord, thank you for being present and active in Kyle's life. I love knowing that you are continually pursuing him, and that he is choosing to follow wherever you lead. I pray that Kyle will always be on guard, standing firm in his faith. May he always be a man of courage, and be strong in you, dear Jesus. From this day forward, I pray that Kyle chooses to walk down the paths you have chosen for him, that he listens to your voice telling him where to go, and that he actively seeks to know you in deeper and deeper ways. You alone are Kyle's God, and I pray that he will always be your child. Oh how I praise you for the signs I see of your presence in Kyle's life today. Keep on growing him, Father, in your ways. May he always reflect you.

The Courage to Say "I Can"
"I can do all things through him who gives me strength." Philippians 4:13

Once upon a time there was...
God had different plans.
God makes all things possible.
God has made something beautiful out of my life.
I pray that when my kids face things in their life where they respond with “I can’t” or “I never will”, that God touches their life in such a way that it gives them the courage to say “I can” and “I will.” What an exciting adventure they will be on when they choose to go wherever God leads, no matter their fears, inadequacies, and roadblocks. I believe that God has great plans for my kids, and will not give them anything they cannot handle…as long as they depend on Christ for all that they need.
Courage is being willing to follow God no matter where He leads, and depending on Him each step of the way!
Lord, I pray that you instill big dreams in my children, no matter their fears and doubts. Guide them in overcoming the obstacles that they place in their own path, and fill them with courage, hope, and imagination to reach beyond their assumed capabilities. Precious Father, empower them to believe in themselves, and not only that, but to believe in You for your presence and strength. May they not live with a spirit of timidity, but live out in a spirit of power, love and self-discipline. You have great plans for them, Lord, and I pray they live their lives trusting in that promise. You are a good God, and I give you praise and thanks in advance for the work you’ll do in my children’s lives. And I also thank you for what you’ve done in mine.

Hair Cut Bravery...and Success!
"And even the very hairs on your head are numbered." Matthew 10:30

Kyle saved us some money yesterday. He's been insisting lately that he wants a buzz cut and that we can do it at home. So yesterday we took the plunge.

Kyle was only worried for a second.
I love Kyle's 'can-do' mindset about things, but in all seriousness I couldn't believe he was so brave and trusting to let me cut his hair. Especially when I've never done such a thing before. Sometimes to a 14 year old, hair is everything! No pressure. In spite of my objections, Kyle was insistent this would work. He was so committed to the idea that he paid for the clippers himself (and he obviously took all the risk if this venture didn't work out so well).
Kyle's brave and adventurous spirit will get him far in life. He'll need courage to make friends, go to school, marry a girl, spread the gospel, or live out God's calling in His life. Bravery will be a day by day decision and need, but will bring great success and joy.
The important thing for Kyle to remember is, that if God knows every hair on his head, I'm sure that God knows every detail of where He will send him in his life.

Lord, how amazing it is to know that you know the number of hairs on our head. You know our future and the things you have planned for our lives. What hope, peace, and strength that brings our lives. Give Alyssa and Kyle a bravery and boldness to live life to the fullest, to think of life as an adventure, and know that you are their faithful guide, leader, and protector. Thank you, Lord, that nothing is impossible with you!

Arms of Protection

As Alyssa and Kyle "roll" through life, may they find joy, courage, shelter, and hope living in the shelter of His arms. It's the safest place to be.
Lord, spread your protection over Alyssa and Kyle. I know that you will be their hiding place; you will protect them from trouble and surround them with songs of deliverance. Protect them, Father, from enemies who want to harm them. Protect them in their comings and goings, giving them courage to live out your destiny for their lives. When fear takes hold of their hearts and minds, may they find comfort in the shelter of your arms. When sadness or discouragement mark their days, Lord, move them to rest in you. Please, Lord, spread your protection over my dear children.

Weighed Down with Worry
"Worry weighs us down; a cheerful word picks us up." Proverbs 12:25
The other night Kyle had troubles falling asleep. Worry was filling his mind as he tried to close his eyes. He has a big project and presentation due at school this week. Funny, he seemed unphased by its quick approach before he headed to bed.
Sometimes its in the quiet where thoughts begin to spin and we find it hard to turn our minds off. Instead of resting, we wrestle with things that cannot be changed in that moment.
I tried to encourage Kyle to pray, instead of ponder his worries. But honestly, sometimes its easier said than done. My prayer is that worry doesn't become Alyssa and Kyle's default response, but shows itself to be the thing that moves them to be on their knees talking to their Heavenly Father.
How about you? Are you worrying or praying?
Lord, you are our refuge and strength, and an ever-present help in trouble. Help Alyssa and Kyle to not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will care for itself. As they learn to put their trust in you, lean on your understanding, and seek your will in all that they do, you will show them which path to take. Lord, you are the one place they can go, and the one person who will hear the cry of their hearts. They can cast their anxieties on you, and you will care for them in personal and precious ways. I pray that Alyssa and Kyle's hearts aren't weighed down by worry, fear, and anxiety, but that you Lord, fill them with your peace that passes all understanding. For this I pray...Amen.

The Thirsty
"I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward." Mark 9:41
Yesterday was a very long day. In fact, long doesn't even begin to describe it. It was the second to last day of early voting, and that is where I've been working for the last three weeks. 1,200 + people came through the doors. My job has been to greet those people, ask their name and address, and confirm that they are registered to vote. If they aren't then I help them get registered.
I'll tell you what, talking to that many people is crazy exhausting. And it doesn't help when you forget your handy dandy water bottle. Ugh! Parched is a good way to describe how I felt for a couple of hours. I just kept longing for a break so I could run to the nearest drinking fountain.
In the midst of my struggle a lady came in to drop off her absentee ballot, and seemed very compassionate by how busy it seemed to be in the room. She said to me, "I bet you could really use a drink of water!" To which I replied, "Oh, how did you know? A drink of water would be my saving grace at this moment!" And she walked out the door.
Part of me wondered if the lady would come back with a nice cold bottle of water. I even imagined what I would tell her, and what a BLESSING from God she would have been to me. That would be a God-sighting if I ever saw it!
I think sometimes in life we come across a lot of people who are desperately thirsty and hungry for the Lord. They even say things that let us know of their longing and need, yet often in our busyness or fear we simply gloss by what they have said with their words or actions. How their life would be different if we could offer them the one "thing" that would fill their need. Because you know what?!?! We KNOW and have the "One and Only" that would truly satisfy. Oh how our hearts need to be willing to step out in courage and faith and share the truth about the true Living Water!
This sweet lady never came back with that bottle of water. Which honestly wasn't a surprise. I was just a some stranger in her day. It just gave me pause to think, and pray, that our kids (and even myself) will recognize the needs of those around them, physical or spiritual, and be willing to step out of their comfort zones and be bold in Jesus name!

Lord, open my eyes, and Alyssa and Kyle's eyes, to the hungry and thirsty people who live in our midst. Even to those we barely pass by, strangers in our busyness, may we recognize their cry for something that we have the power to lead them to. Help Alyssa and Kyle to be bold in sharing about you, dear Jesus, and helping others know you in an intimate and personal way. Open their eyes, and prod their hearts, to recognize those around them that need a helping hand in finding you. Lord, fill them with your compassion and love for the lost and hurting of this world. You are the true Living Water and Bread of Life! For this we truly love you!
