Beauty and Power

Today's verse:  "Let all the earth fear the Lord.  Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him."  Psalm 33:8

Today I am visiting the Oregon coast with my mom and sister.  Some girl-time to refresh our batteries and enjoy some moments together.  As we slept, we cracked open the balcony door, and listened to the roar of the majestic ocean.  Such beauty and power.

I don't know why, but the ocean never fails to stir my heart and move my thoughts towards God.

His beauty is indescribable.
His power is uncontainable.
His faithfulness unending.
His grace encompassing.
His love so overflowing.

I stand in awe of Him.

Today, I'm praying that my children's hearts are moved towards God today too, even as they are back home spending the weekend with their Dad.  I long that my children always stand in awe of who God is, and revel at His presence in their lives.

Maybe I'll just bring them to the ocean...because maybe they would just sense His beauty and power too.

Lord, I stand in awe of you today.  I delight in your beauty, power and majesty.  I pray that my children fear you as Lord of their lives, and begin to truly comprehend how immense and real you are.  May their hearts always be moved towards you, and they find themselves truly in awe of who you are.  God, you are an amazing God, and you are beautiful to me.

The Real Deal

Alyssa & Kyle with Santa 1997

Today's verse: "For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved."  Romans 10:10

Santa Claus...just a man.
Easter Bunny...nope.
Cupid...no way.

But Jesus...He's REAL.

We never discounted Santa in our house.  We encouraged the kids to make lists, leave cookies, and even sit on his lap at the mall, but he was never the center of our Christmas celebration.  I think without making him a big deal, the kids never really believed in Santa being someone that was real, and that he actually was bringing them gifts for being good little girls and boys.  Santa was just a man dressed up at the mall, and part of the fun of Christmas.  Just like the Easter Bunny at Easter.

However, unlike Santa, we've pronounced over and over again the reality of Christ in our lives, and that He is someone we can truly believe in.  I pray that my kids take me at my word, and believe that He is Lord, that He is Creator of this world and their Savior, and that He loves them deeper than they can imagine.  He's definitely bigger and better than any Santa Claus, and He gives a much greater gift...salvation.

Believe it!  He's the real deal, babies!

Lord, today I come to you with a heart that is rejoicing in your presence in my life, and want to shout it from the mountain top that you are the one true God and worthy of praise.  It is with my heart that I believe, and with my mouth that I confess you are Lord!  I pray that my children also have hearts that believe and are justified, and mouths that confess you are their Lord.  I pray that if there are moments of doubt, unbelief, or fear, that they will go seeking You for the truth.  Speak to them, dear Jesus, making them aware that you are a real presence in their lives.  Thank you for your salvation, for forgiving our sins, and for loving us unconditionally.  What a precious God you are!  I believe...and I pray my children do too!

Sisters and Brothers

Today's verse:  "As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace."  Ephesians 4:1-3

Sisters and brothers.  Best friends and worst enemies...all within a five minute time frame. They know how to push buttons in the blink of an eye, yet they also can be each others greatest cheerleader.  I cherish the moments when I catch a glimpse of them treating each other with a love and kindness that they would show their greatest friend.  I also love watching them laugh together, or have a conversation, especially when one is showing great concern over the others needs.

At this age, my kids claim that they are not "friends", and sometimes treat each other more like lepers, than sister and brother.  I try to convince them the importance of their relationship, and that they will need each other one day.  They will go through trials in their life where they will need someone who will stand by them through thick and thin, and love them no matter what.

They put up (and put-up is definitely the word of the day) with each other as family now, but I pray that one day they will realize the treasure they have as friends.  I pray that they will forgive the crazy things of today, and love one another unconditionally through the things of tomorrow.

I think people that have a brother or sister don't realize how lucky they are. Sure, they fight a lot, but to know that there's always somebody there, somebody that's family. --Trey Parker

Lord, you have given me two precious children and they fill my days with much joy.  However, when they fight, are impatient with one another, and hold onto grudges, my heart breaks.  I pray Lord, that they will live lives that are completely humble and gentle; being patient, bearing with one another in love. May they make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.  Lord, may forgiveness flow freely with one another.  Their friendship can can be a life-giving relationship that brings them much joy, but at times it will take a bit of effort.  May they each be willing to set aside hurts, fears, and anger to love one another the way that you call them to love.  Lord, you have created our family in beautiful ways, and put Alyssa and Kyle together as sister and brother for special purposes in their lives.  May they find the true joy you have for them in this relationship.  As sisters and brothers...and as best friends.

Thankful Thursday: I Am Not Alone

Today's verse:  "You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand."  Psalm 16:11

I have a new favorite song, and I just had to share it.  The words move me each time I hear it.  What a beautiful reminder that God never leaves us alone.  I want my kids to know that truth too.  His daily presence is the sweetest thing I know.  I'm so thankful.

You're not alone for I am here
Let me wipe away your every fear
My love, I've never left your side
I have seen you through the darkest night
And I'm the One who's loved you all your life
All your life

Lord, you have made known to me the path of life; and you fill me with joy in your presence.  My heart cries out with thanks that you never leave me alone.  Your presence fills me with peace when I am anxious, lonely, or burdened.  I pray, Lord, that my children come to know your presence in their lives in a precious way.  When their days feel dark, you will light their way.  When they are unsure of their future, you will lead them and fill them with peace.  When they are overwhelmed by loneliness, you will be their dearest companion.  Lord, I know that you will always be pursuing them, and drawing them to yourself.  Thank you, Lord, for never leaving us alone.

Trail Guide for Life

 North Idaho Family Hike 2007

Today's verse:  "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path."  Psalm 119:105

Family hikes make for fun memories.  Throwing pine cones at one another, playing follow the leader, or running up ahead and jumping out to scare the person in the lead, all bring lots of laughter.  And often there is such beauty to behold in the course of a hike. There's no better way to spend a family day!

Not all paths we tread in life are clearly marked.  Some journeys are hard and arduous climbs, filled with stumbling blocks and things to trip us up.  My kids will walk some beautiful trails, yet some of these journeys will also be hard.  They will even hit crossroads in their lives, where they won't really know which direction is the right one.  The good news for each hike, however, is that God offers to be their ultimate trail guide, and He gives us His Word to light their path.

My prayer is that my children will seek to know and understand the words found in the Bible, and that they will fall in love with what they find there.  It will be their greatest guide, and take them down beautiful paths, leading them straight to their Savior.

Oh what a hike it will be!

Lord, your Word is so precious, and I pray that my children fall in love with what you have written there.  Your Word lights our path in ways that lead us straight to you, and guides us in your everlasting ways.  Lord, use it to show my children where to walk, and how they can follow you.  I pray that they learn to hear your voice when they spend quiet moments pondering your Word, and that they will understand the depths of your love for them.  When they don't know which way to go, I pray that they hear your whisper saying "This is the way, walk in it."

I Do It!

Alyssa working hard filling the pool (1997)

Today's verse:  "All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty."  Proverbs 14:23

A phrase that I often heard my independent little daughter use was, "I do it."  Most of the time I loved those sweet words coming from her mouth.  Only when I was in a hurry, did I struggle to let her figure things out on her own. But now, I'm thinking that can-do attitude will help her go far in life.

When her homework is hard to understand, I pray that she will respond with "I do it."
When relationships take work to figure out, I pray that she will choose to say "I do it."
When God issues a call on her life, and it seems to difficult, I pray that she shouts "I do it."
When a task seems too difficult, may her first words be "I do it."

And though I pray for this independent strength in my daughter, where she doesn't give up too easily on hard tasks, I also pray that she never pushes God aside and forgets to look to Him for the the wisdom, strength, and guidance she truly needs for a successful life.

Being independent and dependent at the same time, can be a tough act to balance, but I know she can do it.

A job well done!

You Lord are my strength and my song; you have become my salvation.  Be my children's strength and salvation.  Fill them with your spirit and give them a confidence to say "I can do it!", no matter how difficult the task.  When they are unsure, fearful, or lacking the strength, I pray that they look to you, Lord, for wisdom, hope, assurance, and peace.  Be their guide, day after day, and moment by moment, filling them with everything they need for any situation.  Sovereign Lord, be my children's strength; make their feet like the feet of a deer, you enable them to go on the heights.

Gentleman in Training

My sweet babies going to a wedding!

Today's verse:  "Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God."  1 John 4:7

The other day my son opened my car door for me.  I have to admit, his thoughtfulness took me by surprise.  At the age of thirteen, he goes back and forth between being an "alien" and a sweetheart.  This was one of those wonderful moments of sweet awe at the gentleman he is becoming.

Odds are that one day Kyle is going to have a girlfriend, and maybe a wife, on top of the other women in his life (his mother, sister, grandmothers, aunts, etc).  I pray that he has taken note of how his dad spoils me, and treats the women in his life with much love and respect.  Giving a listening year, speaking a kind word, or lending a helping hand.

Opening doors can be added to the list.  It isn't mandatory, but just a small way to show importance and care for the one he is with. Women feel cherished by the little acts of kindness and love.

Kyle, always show yourself to be the gentleman God has made you to be.

PS...Don't forget, flowers are nice sometimes too!

Lord, you have given me a tender-spirited, kind-hearted, young boy.  I often see your spirit reflected in him.  I pray that as he grows into a young man, that he continues to be tender, kind, compassionate, and loving.  May he always respect the women in his life, and treat them as ones precious and honored in your sight.  Let him be an agent of love, because love comes from you.  May love always be on my son's lips, evident in his hands, and proven by his feet.  Lord, may my son be a gentleman in high regard who lives reflecting you in all his words and actions.  May you shine in him all the days of his life, dear Jesus!

Ready or Not!

Sleeping Beauty Alyssa (approx.1999)

Today's verse:  "I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint."  Jeremiah 31:25

Today my daughter is traveling home from a weekend Bible Quiz meet held in Oregon.  I'm pretty sure that she has probably had a wonderful weekend.  And despite the joy of traveling on a bus with her friends, staying with her aunt, uncle and cousins, seeing all of her buddies from Oregon, and quizzing, she is probably going to end the weekend in a state of tiredness. Hopefully, not in a state of crabbiness.

And then there is our son, who is having basketball practice four times a week, and baseball practice three times a week on top of the regular day to day stuff.  Needless to say, by the weekend Kyle is ready for a little down time.

When the kids were little, naps were a required part of our daily routine.  Kyle always went down easy, but Alyssa was a whole different story.  Sleep was never one of her favorite things.  Just as when she was little, Alyssa is night owl, never wanting to settle down for the night, especially when she can sleep away the morning.  Only until pure exhaustion hit would she finally crash (as in the picture above). Needless to say, nap time is only missed by their mother.

So, in the busyness of my kids schedules, I'm not sure how they find rest for their weary bodies.  I pray that on this Sabbath day they find moments of quiet and refreshment...because, friends, Monday is coming!  Ready or not.

 One Tired Boy--1999
Lord, you promise to refresh the weary and satisfy the faint. You are the giver of our strength.  Be with my children today and fill them with your power and might.  In this sabbath day of rest, draw them to yourself and be at home in their hearts.  Prepare them for the week ahead, and all their activities and responsibilities.  In the moments available to them for quiet and rest, help them to choose wisely to refuel their bodies, and when there is need to be busy about their work, may they be disciplined and effective with their time.  When we come to you in our weariness, we will find all the rest that we need.  Thank you, Father, for taking care of all our needs in this day, and in the week to come.  You are our wonderful strength!

The Greatest Gift of All

Today's verse:  "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."  Acts 4:12

Lord, I believe that you so loved this world, that you gave your one and only Son, that when anyone believes in Him they would receive the gift of eternal life.  I believe that you did that for me, and you did that for my children.  I pray that my children come to believe that themselves in real and precious ways.  May the choice that they made when the were small, to follow you with their lives, continue on into old age.  I pray that they live every day loving you, dear Jesus, and fulfilling the calling you've placed on their lives.  I pray that they have families of their own that know and believe in you.  Oh that the future generations of our family love you deeply!  Lord, your salvation is a sweet gift and I pray that we never take it for granted.  We cannot ever earn the love and grace you so freely give to us.  Thank you, for the gift of eternal life with you!

Forgiveness Work

Today's verse:  "Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you."  Colossians 3:13

It's said that practice makes perfect, but I'm not so sure when it comes to learning about forgiveness.  I find that forgiveness is hard work most every time.  Some people are easy to forgive, and some circumstances more immediately forgivable, but often it still takes choosing to do the harder thing.

Forgiveness doesn't immediately fix the hurt, or heal relationships, but it does set us on the road God calls us to follow and healing can begin.  I've seen people hold onto unforgiveness for a very long time, and it ruins relationships for a lifetime, and fills hearts with bitterness and anger.  Our unwillingness to forgive someone who has hurt us, actually damages us worse in the end.

I wish that my children didn't have to experience things in their lives where they needed to practice the art of forgiveness, but I know that is unrealistic.  So, I'll just pray that they won't allow bitterness and hurt to take root in their hearts, and forever mess up the important relationships in their lives.

I pray that they will always choose to do the hard work of forgiveness.

"To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love.
In return, you will receive untold peace and happiness."
--Robert Muller

Lord, you bear with your children, and forgive us over and over again.  Thank you, sweet Jesus.  May you helps us to do the same.  Help us to give forgiveness freely, and not hold onto bitterness, anger and hurt, especially in regards to our closest relationships.  Continued to teach us how to do the hard work of forgiveness.  Lord, protect my children from huge hurts in their lives, but where there is hurt (and I know that there will be), I pray they choose to forgive.  And where they hurt others, I pray forgiveness is offered to them.   May my children never let unforgiveness take root in their hearts.  In these moments Lord, I pray that they lean on you for help and guidance.  You are the greatest forgiver of all...may we be more like you!

Thankful Thursday: God's Precious Word

Today's verse:  "Your statutes are my delight; they are my counselors."  Psalm 119:24

I've spent a few hours over the last week pouring through God's Word, looking for scriptures that speak to the needs of the women in my Bible study.  We are going through a study called "Walking by Faith:  Lessons I Learned in the Dark", and in our homework the author Jennifer Rothschild asked us to write down the areas in our life that cause us to feel like we are walking in the dark.  Further in our lesson she asked us to record promises from God's Word that speak to those areas.   I wondered how many women would go and investigate their Bibles for these promises, or how many women even knew how how to look for specific scriptures to speak to their needs.  So my co-leader and I thought that we would go through the list and find a verse or two that held a promise for each woman's situation.

Every woman's "walking  in the dark situation" was different, but did you know that I found a promise that fit each one?  Not only did I find one, but I had troubles containing myself to four or five.  There was no way that I could be exhaustive in finding the promises God has to offer for these women about their difficult situations!  God's Word is full of hope, wisdom, and power.

When my children go through their own dark times, I know where they can go to find answers, direction, and the peace that God has for them.  God's Word will always speak to their need.  I pray that they know and understand the power it holds to change their lives...and fall in love with it forever!

Thank you, Lord, for giving us Your Word!

Dear Lord, your Word is so precious that my words cannot even begin to express the depths of my thoughts.  Thank you for making a way that we can know you and understand the truth of your love for your children.  What a gift you have given us!  When we open the pages of your Word we can gain your wisdom, we find life changing counsel, and we hear you speaking to us.  Lord, I pray that my children fall in love with your Word, and go there to find guidance through their lives.  May they hide your word in their heart. Your Word is life giving and it sustains my soul.  Thank you, dear Jesus for this wonderful treasure.

Upstanding Unselfishness

Today's verse:  "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others."  Philippians 2:3-4

My mother didn't have to teach me to be a self-centered person, nor did I have to teach my children.  Looking after our own interest seems to come by pretty naturally.  Darn it.

Yesterday, Kyle had his first school basketball game, and we had fun going to watch and cheer him on.  Our school isn't really set up for big sporting events and seating for the crowd is hard to come by.  As I scanned all the spectators my eyes kept going back to one woman in particular.  I had my "cameraman" (hubby) take her picture, just so I could give you a visual of what I found so interesting.  This mom came to cheer on her son at the ball game too, and found a spot to park where she could have the perfect view...no matter that it was right in front of a whole row of people that were there first.  Each person behind her had to bend, stretch, and try to get a view of the game on the court.  Everyone was kind enough to not complain to her, as far as I could tell, but what I found interesting was that this woman was never concerned about anyone else but herself.  By golly she had a good view!

As my kids get older, and God's Spirit continues to live in them, I pray that they will become naturals at looking beyond their own wants, needs and desires, and look to the needs and interests of others.  It's a discipline at times, but somewhere along the line I think it becomes our second nature because Jesus is living in us.  I love the times when I see my children thinking of others first, but I also know that we all can do a little bit better.

Putting others first. Setting aside our self desires sometimes and looking to the needs of others.  Not standing in front of the crowd, unaware of everyone else around us. That's how I long to be, and how I hope my kids are too.

By the way, just in case you were wondering...Kyle's team won their game, 17 to 8.

Lord, I thank you for my dear children, and the way they are growing up into thoughtful and considerate adults...most of the time. I pray that your Spirit continues to prompt and teach them to do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than themselves. Help my children to look not only to their own interests, but also to the interests of others.  And as others see their kindness and generosity, may they recognize the reflection of you living in their lives.  Lord, prompt their eyes to see the needs of others.  Prod their ears to hear the hurts, fears, and desires of those around them. May my chldren be unselfish, giving, and encouraging individuals who shine you!!

Wove and Mawwiage

Ken -n- Tresa--August 19, 1989

"Mawwiage. Mawwiage is what bwings us togethew today. Mawwiage, that bwessed awwangement, that dweam within a dweam. And wove, twue wove, wiww fowwow you fowevah and evah… So tweasuwe youw wove… "  --From the "Princess Bride"

Today's verse:  "The Lord God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him'....For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh."  Genesis 2:18, 24

Ken and I began dating 22 years ago today.
And 21 years ago today he got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife.
Every January 19th, my dear hubby and I, celebrate the beginning of our life together.

I look back and think we were so young.  Ken was 18, and I barely 19 when we met, and 20 at the time of our wedding.  I'm sure that the idea of their daughter getting married so young was a cause for concern in my parents minds.  Now that I'm a mother, and my children have hit their teenage years, I can understand that concern and fear so much better.  Dating and marriage could be just around the corner.

Though this is not a new request, I am praying for the marriages of my children.  I am praying for my daughter as she enters the dating years, that she stands by her values and finds a godly man to marry.  I am praying that my son learns to be a godly gentleman who loves and respects women, and finds a mate who follows Christ and will love and respect him in return.  With all my heart I hope that they both have marriages that are centered on Christ, will stand strong through all their trials, be full of love and joy, and remain steadfast in their covenant to one another.

I'm so thankful that my husband loves the Lord, and lives his life serving Christ.  He's been so good to me, and was the mate God had in mind just for me.  I am a blessed woman.  We've now been married 20 years and 5 months!

I hope my children are just as lucky in their mate finds!

Heavenly Father, you made man and said that it was not good for him to be alone.  You designed the marriage relationship, and have made man to need woman, and woman to need man.  I know that you have plans for my children to find a spouse who will love and respect them, and who will be a beautiful part of their lives.  I'm beginning to pray now, even when they are young, for their future mates.  I pray that even now they are being taught about you, and are beginning to have a personal relationship with you as their Savior.  As they grow up and mature, and begin to date, I pray Lord, that you keep them sexually pure until marriage.  I pray that you begin to teach my children, and their future spouses, how to be loving and respectful marriage partners.  Lay a foundation for healthy marriages, and begin placing the desire in their hearts to live in committed marriages that will last a lifetime.  Lord, you are God, and you have a beautiful plan for my children's lives, including what their future families look like.  I'm so thankful that you are God, and have it all under your hand of protection.  Please continue to pursue my children, and their mates, into vital and vibrant relationships with you. I know that the answers to this prayer have already begun, and I look forward to you carrying it out to completion.  Marriage is a beautiful thing.  Thank you, Jesus, for mine!

On My Behalf

Today's verse:  "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will."  Romans 8:26-27

No school here today.  The kids are enjoying the opportunity to sleep in and be lazy.  Not sure what this day will hold, but we will enjoy a little family time together.

In celebration of their day-off, my mind must have decided to take a day-off too.  I've struggled to know exactly how to pray today. The good news is that I have a God who knows exactly what each of my children need.  So, though it may feel like an easy way out, I'm going to hold onto the promise that His Spirit will intercede on my behalf today!  What an amazing God!

Dear Lord, Your Holy Spirit helps me in my weakness.  Today,  I do not know what to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for me, and for my children, with groans that words cannot express.  And He who searches my heart, and searches the hearts of my children, knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for us in accordance with your will.  Your Spirit is a gift, Lord, and I entrust my children's needs to your care today.  You know their weaknesses and strengths, and their fears and hopes, even better than I, and can speak to each condition. Thank you for your Spirit, and that you plead to the Father on my behalf today.

Future Aspirations

Kyle--2005

Today's verse:  "My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be."  Psalm 139:15-16

Do you ever wonder what your kids are going to be when they grow up?  It's a thought that wanders through my head periodically. I have visions of my kids doing something great with their lives.  But doesn't every parent?

One day, when Kyle was in second or third grade, I asked him what he wanted to do when he grows up.  His answer makes me smile, even to this day.

"When I grow up I'm going to be either a professional baseball player or a McDonald's worker!"

Well, I can tell you which one of those options I'm praying for!

What I do know, is that God has great plans for my children's future, and He holds them in His hands.  I just can't wait to watch it all unfold before my very eyes.  I'm just holding on with faith that they follow Him with their lives.

 Kyle--2009

Lord, thank you for my children who are fearfully and wonderfully made by you.  I believe with all my heart that all their days were ordained even before they were born, and that you, Father, have many great plans for their lives.  Plans for a future and a hope.  Lord, I ask that you continue to be their guide and show them the path that you've made just for them.  Help them find their gifts and passions, and use them to bring glory to you all the days of their lives.  May they live all their lives, not with a spirit of timidity, but with a spirit of power, love and self discipline.  Lord, be their God, and lead them in your way everlasting.  I pray that their lives reflect you, and give honor to you, every moment.  Oh how I love you, dear Jesus.

A Repeat: The Unlocked Door

One of many "door" pictures Ken
took on his trip to Morocco 2008

This blog was originally posted on October 31, 2009.

Today’s verse: “My response is to get down on my knees before the Father, this magnificent Father who parcels out all heaven and earth. I ask him to strengthen you by his Spirit—not a brute strength but a glorious inner strength—that Christ will live in you as you open the door and invite him in. And I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you'll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ's love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:14-19 (The Message)

“The doors we open and close each day
decide the lives we live.” --Flora Whittemore

Doors can sometimes be a headache. Especially when they are locked and you can’t get in. I’ll never forget the day that I had to call my husband to come with the extra car keys to help me get inside my van. There are three unusual facts that cause me to remember that particular day well. First, I had inadvertently (or lazily) left the “hide-a-key” inside the van because I had used it a few days earlier (Ggrrrr…those doors). Second, after calling my husband to come save me, I found my keys in the wrong pocket. Therefore having to call back and admit my stupidity. Thirdly, later that afternoon, I had to make another call to my man, and wait in the parking lot of the local grocery store with my groceries in the rain, because I had really locked my keys in the car that time.

Doors can sometimes be a headache. Especially when they are locked and you can’t get in.

The door I know that my children will never find locked is the one that leads straight into Jesus arms. All they have to do is open the door and invite Him in! God doesn’t want to make it difficult for them. Nor will He keep the door locked until they are perfect enough to make His acquaintance. He’s just waiting for them to answer his knock. A relationship with Jesus, God’s forgiveness, and eternal salvation begins by opening this one unlocked door.

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” Revelation 3:20

Open the door, babies!

My response today is get down on my knees before you Father, the magnificent Father who parcels out all heaven and earth. I ask you to strengthen Alyssa and Kyle by your Spirit—not with a brute strength but a glorious inner strength—that Christ will live in them as they open the door and invite you in. And I ask you Lord that with both feet planted firmly on love, they will be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of your love. I pray that they reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God..(Ephesians 3:14-19 The Message) I pray this with great expectancy and in full hope, giving you thanks and praise for loving my children that much!

Children of Compassion

Today's verse:  "This is what the Lord Almighty says: 'Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another."  Zechariah 7:9

As I have watched the news over the last two days, my heart breaks for the people of Haiti.  Such devastation and lost.  Children without parents, and parents without children.  Death.  Pain.  Hunger.  Everywhere.

It feels like a world away, and I can hardly comprehend what these people are going through.  I sit in my home, with my children tucked safely in their beds, and I pray a prayer of thanksgiving.  At the same time, my heart cries to God for His comfort, relief, and hope to descend upon the people of this devastated country.  In what other ways can I help?

On the local news yesterday, I saw some teenagers in an area junior high, who felt a tug on their heart for these hurting people too.  The news anchor hinted that there were many students, in several different schools who were taking "offerings" to send to help in this huge recovery effort.  What compassionate hearts in our young people. Such a beautiful thing to behold.

If there were ever a time in our kids' lives to learn compassion, it could be now.  It may look different when we live so far away, but as they watch and listen to the news stories, may their hearts sense the tug to pray.

And when they see hurting, lonely, or poor people around them, I pray that their spirit is filled with the compassion and mercy of their God.  May they shine Him to those who are in desperate need of His precious presence.

Dear Jesus, my heart cries to you on behalf of the hurting people in Haiti.  Draw the living to you in this time for comfort, peace, and strength.  Heal the hurting, whether it be physically or emotionally, and provide for their needs in powerful ways.  Lord, show your compassion and mercy.  I pray that as my children watch and listen to the stories of loss, death, and fear, that they sense your spirit tugging at them to pray.  If there is something that we can do, besides pray, please show us how.  Here, in our safe world, we are not immune to hurt or loss either, and I pray that when my children cross paths with people going through hard things, that their hearts are moved to help and pray.  May compassion and mercy mark their lives, dear Jesus, forever and ever...shining you in all that they say and do, all of their days.  Lord, thank you for hearing my prayers.

Thankful Thursday: A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Today's verse:  "He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers."  Malachi 4:6

Precious Lord, I thank you for my dear family.  I look at this picture and find my heart bursting with love and gratitude for each person you've designed my family with.  I thank you for the gift my husband is in my life, and for the wonderful father he is to our children.  Thank you for giving me two healthy and precious kids; a daughter and son who are both beautiful in their own ways.  I count our home a blessing and treasure the laughter, joy, and communication that happens within our walls.  I'm especially grateful for the relationship that my husband has with our children and the efforts he goes to in showing our kids how much he loves them.  Thank you for the time he spends getting to know them, hear their hearts, and teach them important things about life and God.  He sacrifices a lot for his family and we all sense security and love.  What a wonderful dad he is!  Thank you for the memories our family has and the joy that comes when we spend time together.  Lord, you have blessed my life richly, and my heart cries out with gratitude!

Pocket Knives and God's Word

Today's verse:  "For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."  Hebrews 4:12

Since he was just a little tyke, Kyle has had a fascination with pocket knives.  I think he first saw one when Papa used it to help cut the tape of really hard to open Christmas gifts.  A tool.  Can you just hear Tim "the Toolman" Taylor doing his man-grunt?  Kyle had a passion to own one of these cool tools.

I wish I remember exactly how old he was when we broke down and let Kyle get his very first pocket knife.  For him it seemed like it had been a lifetime of waiting.  We carefully gave him all the rules and cautions of having such grown-up item in his possession, but he was pretty sure that he understood all that he needed to know.  Within moments of ownership, my son tearfully came into the kitchen yielding a slice in one of his little fingers.  A lesson was well learned that day.  A pocket knife truly IS sharp just like Mom said.

In Hebrews, it tells us that God's Word is living and active, and sharper than any double-edged sword.  That's sharp! It penetrates our hearts, and it judges our thoughts and attitudes.  God's Word does a work in our life, and helps us become more like who God wants us to be.  Every time we open it's pages, it is relevant to our lives.  God wants to speak to us and often does through the Scriptures. He speaks love.  He speaks guidance.  He speaks truth.  And sometimes it cuts to the heart.

Kyle still has a scar left from his first pocket knife experience, and likewise, our experiences in His Word changes us profusely and leaves God's mark on our lives.  It's the best kind of scar ever in my opinion.

May my children's lives be marked by God's Word

Lord, your Word is a precious gift that often we take for granted, nor understand the true power of.  I pray that my children fall in love with your Word and understand the importance of it in their lives.  May they make a discipline of reading it every day, and using it as a help when making decisions that impact their lives.  I pray that they are not intimated when they come to your Word, but find peace, hope, strength, and wisdom within its pages.  Your Word is living and active, and it can changes lives in profound ways.  Use it to change my kids hearts.  Thank you, Lord, for making a way that we can know you.  Thank you for using your Word to speak love to your children.  I love it with my life, and pray that my kids do too!

A Heart of Worship

Today's verse:  "Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care."  Psalm 95:6-7

I wonder if the people in the pews realize that I can see them while I lead worship from the pulpit on Sunday mornings?  I often can tell if someone likes what we are singing, or if they don't.  Sometimes I can even tell if they want to be in church or not, or if they are having a tough day.  I can see those distracted by reading, writing, or chatting with friends.  Or those distracted by those being distracting.  Actually, from the platform, I can see a lot.

I want church to become something my children enjoy.  At some point, I pray that they go to church not because they are made to go, but because they want to.  I want them to fall in love with worshiping God alongside other believers.  Maybe because I lead the music, I hope they meet Jesus when they sing during the worship service.  And even though their dad is the one preaching the message from God's Word, I pray they hear God speak to them, and get something out of the sermon that stretches their faith.

One day, I pray, it will all become something my children want on their own.  I pray that they love being in the presence of God.

Maybe from the platform, I'll see worship in the eyes of my children.

Lord, I love you, and I love coming into your presence to worship you.  What joy I find worshiping you in the quiet of my home, but also when I stand with my church family and declare your praise.  I want that passion to spread to my children, and those in my church.  Lord, please pursue my children, and help their eyes to see how blessed their lives would be if they choose to live for you.  Lord, help make their faith their own, and not just because that is how they've grown up, or because that is what their parents believe.  Lord, I pray that they fall in love with you, and fall in love with spending time in worship.  May church become more than something that they "have to do", but something they cannot live without.  Lord, you are our Shepherd, and we are the flock under your care.  Today, my heart bows down and worships you.

Back to School

Today's verse:  "Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you."  Proverbs 4:6

This morning my kids go back to school after a three week Christmas break.  This mother is doing a happy dance, but they are not.  No surprise there.

I'm praying that today is filled with joy as they begin a new school quarter, with new classes, and even see their friends after the long break.  Though they are grumbling now, I am hoping that God does a change in their hearts and they find an unusual excitement as they get back into learning.  I so want my kids to find a love for learning, and have something spark a great interest that may even lead them into the future God has planned just for them.  Learning, wisdom, and a good education can bring a lot of work, but it can also bring lots of joy.

May it be so today...even though it means our Christmas break has come to an end.

Lord, your wisdom is of greatest worth, and I pray that my kids will always grow in the knowledge of you.  At the same time, may they find great joy in gaining knowledge at school, and in their reading, writing, history class, and even math.  May they find classes that ignite their passion for learning, and teachers that encourage them to strive better and deeper in their classes.  Today, they will need strength to get back into the swing of routine, and so will I.  Lord, be with us in every moment, reminding us that you are God, and you have made us for this day!  Your wisdom we seek.  Thank you, dear Father.

I've Just Seen Jesus

Alyssa & Kyle--2003--New Glasses

Today's verse"My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you."  Job 42:5

I remember when I got a note home from Alyssa's third grade teacher informing us that it was time to have her eyes checked.  Who knew she was having troubles seeing clearly?  Shortly after that, Kyle needed glasses too.  Now we are an entire family who needs help seeing clearly.  But what a blessing it is that there is help out there for vision problems.  Glasses and contacts are such a blessing.  A funny thing to be thankful for, I know.

Often our hearts and minds need help seeing clearly too.  So many things block our clear vision of God.   That's when the Holy Spirit comes in and helps us see God in a new way.  I pray to that end for my children... That they will see Jesus clearly.

We just had to buy new glasses and contacts for Alyssa.  I just love getting that bill.  Good thing our spiritual eyes are free!

Dear Precious Father, what a blessed thing it is that you are not a silent God, you are not far from us, and you don't desire to stay hidden from our sight.  You are a God who longs for your children to come into relationship with you, and so you are pursuing us all the time.  My children's ears have heard of you all of their lives.  They know the stories found in your Word, and have been taught about you over and over again.  I pray, however, that they come to experience you in new ways...in ways that draw them into a powerful relationship of love, conversation, and trust.  Lord, I look forward to the day when they can say that they have seen you with their eyes.  Build their faith, move them to hope, and teach them to trust in you with all their heart, mind, and soul.  Make yourself evident in my children's lives in profound and visible ways.  What sweet words it will be when I hear them say, "I've just seen Jesus."

Photobucket for our Lives

Today's verse:  "He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure."  Isaiah 33:6

Welcome to another new blog layout!  The second one in a month.  My daughter finds so much joy in taking photos and reworking them in Photobucket.  So thanks for putting up with the transformations.  One day we'll get it just right.

Lyss loves to take pictures, and I love seeing the things her eyes catch.  Here's a few that I love...

I know I'm her mom, but I think Lyss has an eye for beauty!  I hope that she continues to use this gift that God has given her.  I love watching the world through her eyes, and seeing her creativity shine.

I pray that as she continues snapping pictures, and enjoys the beauty of God's creation, she falls in love with the Creator.  May she realize, that God is the one who will make beautiful things out of her life.  He is much like Photobucket, if you think I can make that stretch.  He takes someone who is already beautiful, and changes their life and makes them shine.  The touch of the master's hand is a treasure to behold!

All we have to do is let Him enter our lives.  It's a beauty that comes when we accept His sweet salvation!

Lord, you are what makes life so beautiful.  Your salvation is the greatest treasure we can take hold of.  I pray that my children find you as the foundation of their lives, and experience the rich treasure of your wisdom, knowledge, and love.  When they're look back on the pictures of their lives, may they recognize your presence, and give you praise for being their Creator and God.  May they take hold of you, dear Jesus, and hang on to your salvation.  Thank you, Lord, for giving us eternal life.  May it be the greatest treasure of my children's lives.

Visions of Vacuuming Dancing in My Head

In my dreams...

Today's verse:  "I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart."  Psalm 40:8

My kids hate to vacuum.  They would rather clean the toilet, dust furniture, or empty the dishwasher.  When I ask them to take on this "grotesque" task, they whine, squirm, and will do anything to not have to do this job.  In my opinion, I'd rather mindlessly run a machine all over the house, than get my hands dirty.  I'll give you the bathrooms any day!  I'm just sayin'.

Once in a while God gives us "jobs" we don't like either, but because we love Him, and trust Him, choose to obey no matter the cost.  Sometimes it means setting aside our fears, preferences, and desires.  Oh, have I been there!  But when I choose obedience as my primary goal, then God gives me all that I need to follow His direction and will, and He blesses me something fierce in the process.

I pray that my kids always desire to do the will of their Father, even if He calls them to vacuum.  No whining.  No complaining.  Just pure and passionate obedience.

Lord, you are worth following to the ends of the earth.  You are trustworthy enough that I can go wherever you lead.  And you are wise beyond any man, and I will always desire to do your will.  I pray that my children come to know you as that kind of God.  I pray that they too, will desire to follow you wherever you say to go.  May they come to trust you with all their heart, mind and soul, and believe you always have their best interest at heart.  Lord, I look forward to watching your hand guide and direct my children, and how they will choose to respond.  To God be the glory!

Thankful Thursday: Family Game Night

Today's Verse:  "Behold, children are a gift of the Lord."  Psalm 127:3

Last night we had some good family time.  Not my favorite game, but time with my favorite family makes up for it.  I love them all dearly.

 Lyssa

Kyle

The Winner!

Dear Precious Father, thank you for my family.  Thank you for making them each valuable and precious, and blessing my life with their presence.  I am a richly blessed woman for sure.  Thank you for a husband who loves you, follows your calling with his life and serves you, and who provides for his family in abundant ways.  Thank you for a dear daughter who is beautiful, confident, and wise beyond her years.  And thank you for my precious son who is tender towards you, and loving in all that he does.  What a blessing it is when we find time to be together, and can enjoy one another's company.  Thank you for the laughter, the love, and the joy we had just hanging out!  I am truly grateful for my beautiful family!  I pray that me and my household will always serve the Lord!  Amen.

Better Than "Brown Bear, Brown Bear"

Today's verse:  "With all my heart I have sought You; do not let me wander from Your commandments. Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You."  Psalm 119:10-11

One of my kids favorite books when they were little was, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle.  We read it so many times that the Alyssa and Kyle knew it by heart (not that it was a difficult book to memorize) and began to "read" it to me, though reading was not yet within their reach.  Oh how I treasured those times.  At least the first four or five times we read it in one sitting.  Some days I long for those moments again.

As I think about those days, and of my kids passion to read the words of that book over and over again, and how they so easily could quote each phrase, my mind moves to hoping they would do the same with God's Word.  I pray that they fall in love with the Scriptures, and want to read them over and over again, even to the point of memorizing the parts that are most important to them.

May His Word come alive in their hearts and minds, and become their most favorite book of all.

Lord, your Word is so precious.  It is alive and active, and able to judge hearts and minds.  It teaches, guides, and instructs us on how to live as your children.  Above all, it teaches us all we need to know about you as our Savior, and the wondrous depths of your love for us.  What a gift your Word is!  I pray, Father, that my children fall in love with your Word.  I pray that they come to it morning after morning, and sense your Spirit talking to them as they soak in your words.  When times are tough, may they open their Bibles.  When they are afraid, may they find peace within it's pages.  When they need guidance, I pray they let their fingers do the walking through the most important book of their life.  God you are good.  All the time!  I love you and your Word, and may it be so with my children as well!

A Heritage of Faithfulness

I long to dwell in your tent forever
and take refuge in the shelter of your wings

 For you have heard my vows, O God;
you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.

 --Psalm 61:4-5

Three years ago today I lost one of my favorite people in the world.  I miss my Grandpa tons, but know that he's probably enjoying eternity singing and fishing with Jesus.  Grandpa lived his life proclaiming his love of God, and God's love for His people.

Over and over again, I hear of the impact he had on someone's life.  He loved others deeply.

He loved the church.

He loved God's creation...fishing, camping, and hunting.  (This picture reminds me of his "goofy" face that he gave often.)

Grandpa loved his family...each and every one of us.  He prayed that we would all come to know Jesus as our personal Savior and live our lives totally for Him.

I pray that my kids always remember their Great Grandpa Wayne.  They had a few opportunities to get to know him.  He came to a baseball game, he stayed at our home, and he always asked them "How old are you anyway?"  Always ending with the response, "How did you get so ugly in that many years?"  He told them stories, spoiled them with quarters, and I know he prayed for them often.  He left them with a heritage of faithfulness, and I hope they always follow in his footsteps...

Loving God.
Loving others.
Loving the church.
Loving God's creation.
Loving family deeply.
Spreading God's love...all the time!

Lord, thank you for the heritage of faithfulness that you have given me, and my children.  Thank you for my Grandpa Wayne and the life he lived so faithfully for you.  Thank you for the example he was of someone who loved the Lord with all of his heart, mind, and soul.  I pray that my children follow in his footsteps and live their lives in much the same way.  Loving you with all that they are, and making sure that the people in their lives know that they are loved by you as well.  May they be evangelists to the world around them.  May they live their lives fully in love with You!  Today, I am reminded of how blessed I am having had this great man in my life.  May I live following his example each and every day!  Thank you, dear Jesus, for my Grandpa!

Parking Lot Praise

Today's Verse:  "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord."  Psalm 150:6

When the kids were little, and I had the chore of pulling them in and out of car seats, I would pray for a parking spot close to the door, so the lugging, dragging, or prodding would be as minimal as it needed to be.  Now that they are older, I look for the farthest spot, unless it's raining, so that I can get a little exercise.  Ha!  But on those days, when we would win the prize of a prime parking spot, I would tell the kids "God must really love us, look at this perfect spot!"  They would begin cheering, waving their hands in the air, giving God praise for His blessing.

As they began to get older, and I'd find a good spot in a crowded parking lot, I would say, "Guess what!" and they would reply "God loves us!".  Not with quite as much gusto, but they knew the drill, and knew who deserved the praise.  As you can probably picture it, now that they are teenagers, if I would say the same thing they'd probably roll their eyes and  say "Mmmooooommmmm", with a tone that reminds me that parking spots aren't a true sign that God loves me.  Big woop.

My goal back then was to teach my kids to recognize God's precious place in their lives, and the many ways that we can give Him praise.  Praise doesn't often flow from our mouths very easily, and our eyes tend to miss the treasures He wants to shower us with.  It may not be parking spots, but if He loves us that much, I know he cares about those little things in our lives.  It's so much easier to grumble, complain, or become complacent in recognizing the blessings in our lives.  I believe that He is continually finding ways to bless us, His children, and prove to us how much He loves and cares for us.  We just need to open our eyes!

So, I am reminded today, to look for the blessings in my life that God so lavishly has poured out on me, and prompt my kids to do the same. I pray that praise flows from our mouths, giving God thanks for His precious love.

Even if it's for that prime parking spot!

Lord, let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be pleasing to you.  You have given us life, and breath, and you deserve our praise.  Thank you for the many ways you show yourself in our lives.  For the ways you bless us, provide for us, and protect us.  Thank you for the ways you teach us, speak to us, and guide us.  I praise you for my husband and children, for our beautiful home, and for our church family, and the calling you've given us to serve there.  I praise you for the food on our table, the heat pouring out of our vents, and for our beds to sleep in.  Lord, there is so much to thank you for, and my heart is overflowing.  May I continue to be faithful to give you praise every day.  I pray that out of my praise, my children will learn to do the same.  Open their eyes that they may see all the ways in which you've blessed them, and the ways in which you're showering them with your love.  May praise flow easily from their lips, and be a natural response when they see your work in their lives,  Lord, I praise you today for hearing my prayer, for loving me and my family, and for the ways in which I'll see your blessing today.

Cower, Shower Power

Today's verse:  "I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears."  Psalm 34:4

We all have fears.  Some of them are reasonable, yet some make no sense at all.  If used correctly, fear can help protect us from real harm, and cause us to make wise decisions.  However, more often than not, fear keeps us from experiencing all that God has in store for our lives.  Fear sometimes robs us of great things.

We sometimes laugh at Alyssa, because she has this "habit" that developed years ago out of a fear.  I honestly don't know what prompted her to be afraid, or even when it happened, but for years now whenever she walks into the bathroom she has to open the shower curtain.  I'm not sure why, except maybe to check and see if anyone is hiding in the shower.  No, we didn't ever let her watch the movie "Psycho", or frighten her by jumping out from behind the shower curtain when playing hide and seek.  It just seems to be one of those quirks.  An unreasonable fear that causes unreasonable actions.

My kids won't even go into the garage by themselves if it's dark.
Nor go up to the bonus when the lights are all off.
Fear.

I'm sure other fears will arise, and some of them won't be so unreasonable, but I'm guessing that at times these fears will keep them from following or doing what God has called them to do.  Fears will keep them from experiencing God's best, and living in peace and freedom that He desires for them.

We all have fears.  I'm just praying that God will deliver my kids from the unnecessary fears in their lives.  And in times of great anxiety, apprehension, or fear, they will turn to the God who will be their Protector, their Defender, and their Strength.

"For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline."  2 Timothy 1:7

Lord, you are the light of the world, and you dispel all darkness.  Please infiltrate my children's hearts and minds with your light, and dispel the darkness that brings them fear.  When they are afraid, dear Jesus, be their Protector, their Shepherd, their Guide.  Above all, be their hope and peace.  Where there is fear about their future, remind them that you are God and you have a plan.  Where there is fear about relationships, remind them that you are watching over them, and are the healer.  Protect my children Lord, from the enemy using their fears to keep them from all that you have planned for them.  Lord, dispel every fear and give my children your spirit of power.

Believe the Message

Today's verse: “I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life." John 5:24

My kids have had many opportunities to hear the message of Christ in their lives. Sunday school, VBS, Sunday morning messages, youth group, summer camp, NWYM activities, stories told by their Grammy and Papa...the list goes on and on. The message has been told time and time again, in many different ways, always planting seeds. Growing up in the church has some benefits, if I do say so myself.

My prayer, however, is that the message my children have heard becomes more than just a "story". This message of God's love changes everything. Somewhere it needs to move from being just mere knowledge, and become their LIFE. It changes how they live, how they love, and how they long for eternal things. I want it to be the air that they breathe.

I pray that it becomes more than just their parents story, but it becomes their very own.

Lord, thank you for being a God who is living and active in our lives, always pursuing us. loving us, and speaking to us. I pray for my children's eternal salvation, and that they may come to know and believe in you as their personal Savior, and receive the gift of forgiveness and eternal life. May my children hear your message in a new way in this coming year, and understand it as the truth for their life, changing how they live, love, and respond. Lord, you are the air that we breathe, and the reason that we live. May my children believe in you, from now, until the end of their life, accepting the greatest gift of all!
